Definition of Stress

Stress Management

1. STRESS is the psychological and physiological reaction that takes place when you perceive an imbalance in the level of demand placed on you & the capacity to meet that demand. (Jeff Davidson)

2. A major cause of low productivity, high absenteeism, bad judgment, misallocation of resources & poor moral. (Robert Axles)

How to Avoid Stress?

1. Learn to relax. Learn to unwind. Treat yourself with self relaxing techniques.
2. Enjoy a warm salt bath or foot spa. A sea salt bath provides a medium for deep relaxation, as well as feast of minerals for the skin. Practitioners of alternative medicine recognize the therapeutic value of warm salt baths.
3. Practice 5 S (smile, speak, sound, spiritual, SEX) Smiling and having a positive outlook on problems can greatly decrease the body's excretion of cortisol, a hormone secreted in the adrenal gland as a response to stress. Speaking with someone you trust to confide matters of your concern decreases the feeling of carrying your worries all by yourself. Who knows? By talking with someone, you might find the person who can provide a solution to your problem. The sound pertained here is the sound of nature or sound that are God-made such as chirping of birds, rustling of the leaves, waterfalls and waves in beaches. Spirituality here means having a connection with a supreme being to remind ourselves and make us reflect on one's greater purpose in life. SEX is an acronym that stands for Stop addiction, Eat a balanced diet and eX-ercise.
4. Have a massage. Among the benefits of massage are that it calms the nervous system and promotes a sense of relaxation. It improves blood circulation which delivers oxygen and nutrients to the cells of the organs in the body. It is also known to stimulate the lymphatic system, which carries away the body's waste products. Lastly, it prevents and relieves muscles, cramps and spasms.
5. Have enough amount of sleep. Studies show that those who are sleep-deprived experience chemical imbalance and disturbed metabolism in the body. Researches also reveal that extended periods of lack of sleep can hinder the body's natural ability to produce insulin, a chemical responsible to help digest the sugars in our blood.
6. Read. Reading is great way to relax. Picking up a book can give your mind a break from whatever is causing the stress for that time. Fantasy is a good way to help get away from all connections with present time stress. Through reading, one can go to another world, time and visit someone else's imagination. By reading, it is a form of exercise for your mind that helps you focus, concentrate and improve your ability to remember things.
